Reimagining ALOUD's in-person events with seamless, engaging, community-centered experiences.
ALOUD, a program under the Los Angeles Library Foundation, faced challenges with accessibility, engagement, and attendance for its in-person events, compounded by limited staffing and resources. Our team reimagined the attendee journey to address these barriers, transforming logistical pain points into opportunities for connection. Through research, field observations, and innovative design solutions, we introduced a volunteer program, seasonal program, and practical tools to enhance communication, navigation, and engagement. These efforts created an inviting event experience that fostered community, reduced confusion, and brought ALOUD’s cultural programming to life.
ALOUD struggled with a 60% no-show rate and attendee dissatisfaction stemming from unclear event communication, navigation challenges, and limited opportunities for engagement. Additionally, the program’s minimal staff and resources constrained marketing, website updates, and event execution, impacting the overall attendee experience.
- Attendees desired meaningful social engagement but faced barriers due to logistical confusion and a lack of pre-event communication. - Field observations revealed that simple tools, like clear signage and volunteer support, could significantly reduce attendee frustration. - Cultural events thrive when they balance practical guidance (e.g., maps, schedules) with community-building activities (e.g., post-event mingling). - Leveraging volunteers could bridge the gap between limited staff resources and attendee needs, creating a human-centered support system.
Our solutions focused on enhancing accessibility, engagement, and communication: -Volunteer Program: Our team served as guides and community connectors, stationed at key points to assist attendees. -Pre-Event RSVP Toolkit: A comprehensive toolkit featuring parking maps, event schedules, and attendee networking prompts reduced pre-event uncertainty. -Seasonal Program: A literary-inspired playbill offered exclusive content and a sense of cohesion across events. -Interactive Engagement Elements: Features like stickers, discussion circles, and photo-booths created organic opportunities for attendees to connect post-event.
